Title: Reactivation, Replay and Preplay: How It Might All Fit Together Reactivation, Replay and Preplay: How It Might All Fit Together

چکیده
Sequential activation of neurons that occurs during “offline” states, such as sleep or awake rest, are correlated with neural sequences recorded during preceding exploration phases. This so-called reactivation, or replay, has been observed in a number of different brain regions such as the striatum, prefrontal cortex, primary visual cortex and, most prominently, the hippocampus. Reactivation largely co-occurs together with hippocampal sharp-waves/ ripples, brief high-frequency bursts in the local field potential. Here we first review the mounting evidence for the hypothesis that reactivation is the neural mechanism for memory consolidation during sleep. We then discuss recent results that suggest that offline sequential activity in the waking state might not be simple repetitions of previously-experienced sequences. Some offline sequential activity occurs before animals are exposed to a novel environment for the first time, and some sequences activated offline correspond to trajectories never experienced by the animal. We propose a conceptual framework for the dynamics of offline sequential activity that can parsimoniously describe a broad spectrum of experimental results. These results point to a potentially broader role of offline sequential activity in cognitive functions such as maintenance of spatial representation, learning or planning. 1E-mail: [email protected] 2E-mail: [email protected] 3E-mail: [email protected]

متن کاملCryptanalysis of Yeh-Shen-Hwang's One-Time Password Authentication Scheme
The well-known S/KEY one-time password scheme was designed to counter eavesdropping and replay attacks [1]. The success of S/KEY stems from its efficiency and simplicity as well as its security property. S/KEY uses simple hash functions and does not require other complex cryptographic primitives. Even though S/KEY is immune to eavesdropping and replay attacks, it is susceptible to preplay attac...
متن کاملMemory reactivation in healthy aging: evidence of stimulus-specific dedifferentiation.
We investigated how aging affects the neural specificity of mental replay, the act of conjuring up past experiences in one's mind. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and multivariate pattern analysis to quantify the similarity between brain activity elicited by the perception and memory of complex multimodal stimuli. Young and older human adults viewed and mentally replayed sh...
متن کاملOverlapping memory replay during sleep builds cognitive schemata.
Sleep enhances integration across multiple stimuli, abstraction of general rules, insight into hidden solutions and false memory formation. Newly learned information is better assimilated if compatible with an existing cognitive framework or schema. This article proposes a mechanism by which the reactivation of newly learned memories during sleep could actively underpin both schema formation an...
متن کاملThe Memory Trace Reactivation and Recon- struction Theory of Therapeutic Hypnosis: The Creative Replaying of Gene Expression and Brain Plasticity in Stroke Rehabilitation
I tell the story of how I used my dreams and early training in therapeutic hypnosis with Milton H. Erickson to facilitate my own creative rehabilitation from a stroke at the age of sixty-nine. I explore how currently emerging neuroscience research on memory trace reactivation and reconstruction may be foreshadowing a new theory of the basic ideodynamics of therapeutic hypnosis on a molecular ge...
